How does parent coaching work?

What is parent coaching?

A coach is someone who brings out the best in a talented athlete. The coach teaches skills, builds on strengths, works with the player to identify and overcome weaknesses, and encourages him to reach his maximum potential in the sport.  A parent coach does exactly the same thing for parents. All parents have strengths and challenges, and a skilled coach will help you determine what you want to strengthen and what you want to change so you can be the parent you long to be.  The coaching relationship focuses on the here and now, on setting goals and helping you to be accountable for achieving them, on brainstorming strategies, and on celebrating with you when you move forward.

Coaching is not therapy, though it is therapeutic.  It’s not education, though  it is educational.  And while your coach is an expert on child development and parenting, YOU are the expert on your own family.  Coaching will help you re-connect with your own intuitive knowledge of the best ways to respond to your children.  By clearing out old patterns, misconceptions, and reactivity that gets in the way of being the loving leader you need to be in your relationship with your child, you can truly experience what it is to LOVE parenting as much as you love your child.

What can I expect from Susan?

Picture
We will work as partners for a minimum of three months, and often longer. Coaching will challenge you, but it will also sustain you and energize you as you reach your goals and improve the quality of your life and your children’s.  Most of my work is done through telephone or Skype sessions that last 50 minutes on average and are usually scheduled weekly. Everything we discuss will be  completely confidential, and you will feel supported and not judged in any way.  Our first sessions will be devoted to prioritizing the problems you would like to solve.  Subsequent sessions will consist of breaking these problems down into manageable goals, coming up with strategies, assigning tasks, and assessing your progress on assignments from the week before.  It is an active, co-creative process in partnership and can be very energizing for you, while at the same time helping you to relax and focus on what you want and need.

For more information or to schedule a complimentary 20 minute introductory session, give me a call at (847) 223-4996.
I look forward to meeting you!
